James' Review

Peter Schell and Magali Gely are a husband and wife team from NZ who came to Australia in the early 1990s to study oenology and marketing at Roseworthy College. They have spent four vintages making wine in France, mainly in the south, where Magalis family were vignerons for generations near Montpellier. The focus at Spinifex is the red varieties that dominate in the south of France: mataro (more correctly mourvedre), grenache, shiraz and cinsaut. The wine is made in open fermenters, basket-pressed, with partial wild (indigenous) fermentations, and relatively long post-ferment maceration. This is a very old approach, but nowadays la mode. The current releases are superb, the best so far to come from this top- class producer. Exports to the UK, Canada, Belgium, Singapore, Hong Kong, China and NZ.

Wine Glass

2012 Spinifex La Maline
Whether Guigal and its stupendous La Mouline vineyard are pleased by the name, I don't know. Deep, intense crimson; this takes the Spinifex '12 shiraz trio onto an altogether different and higher level, black fruits the core of the profound bouquet and full-bodied palate with a tsunami of fruit, licorice, leather, verjuice, savoury/foresty tannins and oak.

Rating 98 To 2052

2012 Spinifex Indigene
The combination of blackberry, plum, multi-spice, dark chocolate and earth of the impossibly complex palate capture the message of the equally complex bouquet without missing a beat. The flavours roll on relentlessly, like waves crashing on a beach in the night. Shiraz/Mataro.

Rating 97 To 2037

2012 Spinifex B'te Noir
Perfect crimson-purple; the fragrant and impressive bouquet leads into a medium-bodied palate with mesmerising texture and mouthfeel, with juicy, glossy red and black fruits cascading through a latticework of fine, foresty/savoury tannins. Shiraz.

Rating 96 To 2037

2012 Spinifex Miette Barossa Valley Mataro
Deeply coloured; the complex bouquet has aromas of red and black fruits, together with spice and dried herbs, the luscious and complex palate placing it at the big end of town, but with class on its side. Great value.
14.5% alc.
Rating 94 To 2025

2012 Spinifex Miette Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mataro
The perfumed bouquet is full of aromatic red fruits, ranging from strawberry through to raspberry and red cherry, allied with spice and bramble; the restrained alcohol invests the palate with a freshness often lacking in Barossa GSM blends, the light colour simply irrelevant.
13.5% alc.
Rating 93 To 2020

2012 Papillon
A 68/32% blend of grenache and cinsaut. The bright and clear colour flies a convincing flag for the spicy, savoury, bramble subtext to the primary play of red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant fruit flavours. The texture and mouthfeel are also distinctively different to the other Spinifex wines - not necessarily better, just different.
13.5% alc.
Rating 93 To 2025
