James Suckling Tasting Report:
New Barossa Shows Great Diversity

February 4th, 2015

Spinifex Barossa Indigene

This blend of shiraz and mataró from Barossan winemaker Peter Schell shows deep, broody aromas of satsumas, plums, black cherries and blackberry fruits along with hints of graphite, roasting game, "Old Jamaican" chocolate, bay leaves, garrigue, black pepper and exotic spices. Savory and finely honed on the palate with great fruit density, meaty facets, Asian spices, graphite and a scaffolding of beautifully sandy tannins that flow through the wine. Long of finish, and well composed, this is rich yet fresh and restrained. A superb wine offering amazing value. Drink now.

Spinifex Grenache Barossa Valley Old Vine Moculta

A super-cool, peppery expression of old-vine grenache that has a wealth of spices and intense, raspberry-scented fruit aromas on offer. Really fresh, typical grenache characters. The palate has fine but very sturdy, composed, long, fine-textured and assertive tannins. Superb now, but better with six or more years of age. Drink in 2018.

Spinifex Barossa Valley Esprit

One of the ultimate Barossa benchmarks, this is 78% grenache, 10% mataró, 6% cinsault, 4% shiraz and 2% carignan. The nose has fragrant red grenache fruits in abundance with attractive, sweet, musky, whole-bunch notes and a fine, spicy lift. Striking freshness here. The palate's pared down to essence-like, red-fruit flavord wrapped tightly around a core of driving tannins. Captivating definition and detail. The Barossa doesn't get much better than this. Drink in 2017.

Spinifex Barossa La Maline

Peter Schell's La Maline is a blend of shiraz sourced from the Barossa Valley and the higher, cooler altitudes of neighbouring Eden Valley. Vibrant red/purple in hue with high-toned aromas of blue and black fruits as well as hints of wood smoke, Asian spices, graphite, red plums and purple flowers. Medium-bodied and showing lovely weight and flow across the palate, this a wine that comes across in such a natural way, with the fruit sitting perfectly in line with the tannins and acidity. An elegant wine showing great fruit purity, tension and balance. Drink in 2018.

Spinifex Barossa Bete Noir

Peter Schell, a New Zealander transplanted to the Barossa is one of the stars of the region, producing composed, elegant wines from vineyards across the region. Medium red/purple in the glass with vibrant blackberry fruit aromas suggesting also a ferrous edge. Hints of spices, dark chocolate and purple flowers carry over onto the palate with its curtain of fine, gravely tannins and a bright line of acidity providing ample propulsion on the lengthy, spicy finish. Drink in 2018.
